The study focuses on a comprehensive evaluation of the effect that urban biomass combustion for space heating has on public health. It couples extensive PM measurements in the ambient and indoor air, chemical analysis for biomass burning markers and population exposure modeling using time-activity patterns and intra-day variability of the particulate pollution profile. The results show a significant increase in population exposure to hazardous particulate matter in 2012 compared to 2011 and previous years in Thessaloniki.
